Adverse weather conditions led to the cancellation of eight arrivals and seven departures at Madeira Airport between 11:00 and 16:40 this Sunday, where winds affected flight operations, causing numerous cancellations and delays.
According to information available on the official website of Cristiano Ronaldo Airport on the island of Madeira, seven flights from Lisbon, Porto and London have been cancelled, with another seven cancellations expected by the end of the day.
In terms of arrivals, between 11:00 and 16:40, eight flights failed to land in Funchal, and by the end of the day, seven more flights had been cancelled.
There is also information on several flights with new departure and arrival times.
Since 11:00 this Sunday, six flights have landed in Funchal and five more have taken off.
By 10:00 a.m., no flights had taken off or landed at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport.
Traffic has been restricted since Saturday evening.
Madeira Island is the only area in the country where the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued an orange warning for hot weather on Sunday, with a yellow level active for the island of Porto Santo in the same region.
A yellow warning, the least serious of the three, is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation, while an orange warning (level two) is issued when a moderate risk meteorological situation is too high.
A period of very cloudy weather with some clouds on the south-west side of Madeira Island is forecast for this Sunday.
Winds should be light to moderate, blowing from the north/northeast, moderate to strong, at 30 to 45 kilometres per hour, occasionally gusting to 70 kilometres per hour in the highlands, in the extreme east and west of Madeira Island and on Porto Santo Island.
The wind also made it difficult to extinguish the fire that broke out on Wednesday in the municipality of Ribeira Brava and spread to the municipality of Camara de Lobos, which continues to cause concern for the authorities.
