Mozambique’s National Health Service Unprepared for Possible Smallpox Outbreak

The Mozambique Medical Association told Luce on Wednesday that the national health system is not prepared for a possible smallpox outbreak, citing public education and institutional capacity as key challenges.

“There are a number of issues that need to be addressed in terms of predicting transmission chains and how to contain a possible outbreak. There is no information for communities yet (…). Frankly, we are not ready,” Napolean Viola, a spokesman for the Mozambique Medical Association, told Lusa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the monkeypox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency, with cases confirmed among children and adults in more than a dozen countries and a new variant in circulation believed to be more dangerous than the one discovered in 2022.
