The girl was in the ex-footballer’s care at the time of the attacks. A distressed Kiernan texted friends complaining about the child: “She’s getting on my nerves. I’m going to hit her,” he said. After the attack on the girl in January 2020, Kiernan called paramedics to her home in England, claiming the toddler had fallen into a dolls’ house and lost consciousness.
The girl was taken to Southend General Hospital and placed in an induced coma for two weeks due to the severity of her injuries.
In addition to the permanent head injuries, doctors found 17 different injuries to the child’s legs, back, face and chest. Experts said the injuries were consistent with the child being “violently shaken… and her head likely striking a hard surface.”
Kiernan Hughes-Mason was a director of Anfield Borough Football Club but the English football club decided to relieve him of his duties after learning of the conviction.
“Anfield Borough Football Club is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and accountability and we believe this action is necessary to uphold those values,” the club said in a statement.
The former footballer was a player for Essex club Hashtagh United, who also responded to the verdict, saying the crimes were “frankly disgusting”.
The sentence will come into force on September 10.
