Eriksson, farewell, football lord

At Benfica, he marked an era because when he arrived in Portuguese football in 1982, he was considered a breath of fresh air. The title of national champion in his first year confirmed his special aura. And immediately he marked his place in the history of the club.

Sven-Göran Eriksson, a Swedish citizen born in the small town of Sunne, died this Monday at the age of 76 from pancreatic cancer.

Football is losing a worthy figure who always led its presence in the world with elegance and fair play. A “gentleman”, as the English would say, who once handed over to him the command of the national team.

After a brief career as a footballer, Eriksson shook up his existence, as well as the football world, when he led lowly Gothenburg to UEFA Cup glory in 1982. Fernando Martins, then president of Benfica, wasted no time in signing him.

Luz consolidated his success. In two years, he won two championships, the Portuguese Cup and reached the final of the UEFA Cup. He would later return to where he was happy to win another championship and the Super Cup. He then made a career around the world, with great success in Italy.

He was England manager for five years and his career has since gone downhill. Never to the point that he has been lost in the memory of the Portuguese and, above all, Benfica fans.
