An 88-year-old man was arrested by the PNP on suspicion of causing a fire that broke out on Tuesday in Fortiosa, in the municipality of Portalegre.
The fire may have been caused by arson set by the suspect.
A civil defense source told Lusa that the fire left an elderly resident of the area with minor injuries and minor burns on his hand.
According to a source in the Polish People’s Republic, this is the same man who was taken to the Portalegre hospital.
The suspect will be brought to the Portalegre court on Wednesday for a first judicial interrogation and possible application of coercive measures, a source in the Republican National Guard said.
The fire, which broke out in bushland in the Fortios area on Tuesday afternoon, was contained at 7.16pm, a civil defence source said.
The commander of the Alto Alentejo Subregional Emergency and Civil Protection Unit, Rui Conchinha, told Lusa that the fire had engulfed an area of scrub and pine forest in the Fortiosa area and the alarm was raised at 2:59 p.m.
According to the same source, traffic on Estrada Nacional 18 and Estrada Nacional 246 is temporarily closed due to the fire.
He added that 237 operators were involved in extinguishing the fire, supported by 71 vehicles and 12 aircraft.
