Authorities seized more than 5,000 kilograms of sardines in the fishing port of Sesimbra on Wednesday, with an estimated value of 35,560 euros, the National Republican Guard (GNR) said on Thursday.
A GNR statement explained that the seizure took place as part of an inspection carried out by the Coastal and Border Control Unit “to ensure compliance with the legal regulations governing sardine fishing.”
“On one of the vessels in the port, military guards checked the catch for excess of the established limit,” the note says.
During the action in the fishing port of the Setubal district, authorities inspected four vessels and identified the captain of the offending vessel.
The seized sardines were later taken to the auction houses for sale.
“Sustainable fisheries mean leaving enough fish in the sea, avoiding overfishing, so that their populations can adequately reproduce, constantly renew themselves, remain productive and healthy,” says GNR.
