Italian police said this Thursday they have confiscated a large arsenal at the home of Raffaele Imperiale, an Italian mafia boss known to own several stolen paintings by artist Vincent van Gogh.
According to Reuters, the paintings were stolen in Amsterdam in 2002 and discovered by police in 2016 in a villa owned by Imperiale near the southern Italian city of Naples. Each of the works cost about 50 million euros.
According to a statement from the Naples prosecutor’s office, the police found more than 80 weapons hidden in the basement of the Imperiale’s garage, including three Kalashnikovs, a grenade and 5,067 cartridges of various calibers.
Imperiale is considered a key figure in international drug trafficking and money laundering and has close ties to the Camorra mafia. He was arrested in Dubai in 2021 and extradited to Italy the following year.
