South Korean company Petnow has created a mobile face recognition app for pets to replace microchips commonly used to identify animals.
The application uses fingerprints from the nose of a dog or cat to identify biometric data.
“Just like humans have fingerprints, every dog and cat has their own unique fingerprint on their nose. So we used the nose as a pet identification. Our ultimate goal is to replace microchipping because it can be very invasive for animals.” , Petnow’s Johnny Lee said in a statement to Reuters during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Lee explained that just like humans have unique fingerprints that don’t change over time, dog and cat noses work the same way. With the Petnow app, dog and cat owners can register the faces of their pets.
The app works with artificial intelligence and quickly analyzes the nose to collect data. It focuses on the detected nose, automatically takes 5-20 high-quality photos and sends them to a common server to recognize the pet’s biometric information. According to the company, the app is 98.97% accurate.
The application also has a feature that allows, if the animal is lost, it is easy to identify it by whoever meets it on the way. Just point your phone at the animal’s face and the owner will receive a notification.
