A 32-year-old man who stabbed his father to death in 2021 in Lusada will be released from prison this Saturday after exceeding the maximum pre-trial detention. The law requires that a final decision be made within a maximum of two years. The defendant has been in prison since March 4, 2021. The release came after the Porto Court of Appeal ruled that the defendant should be tried a third time. At issue are doubts about the possible unreliability of the defendant.
Nuno Soares, who stabbed his father seven times, was sentenced at first instance to 21 years in prison. The defense appealed this decision, and the Court of Porto allowed the appeals submitted. Nuno Soares intends to prove that at the time of the crime he was in a state of psychotic breakdown. The landed ordered a new psychological examination of the man.
Lawyer Paulo Gomes, in an interview with Correio da Manha, called it “a victory for the law, legal norms and common sense, which, unfortunately, were not in the decision.”
