Increased sentence for man who killed son-in-law with a sledgehammer

The Supreme Court has increased the sentence of a man who killed his son-in-law with a sledgehammer in Cerdedo, Botica. Antonio Gonçalves, 56, will now have to serve 16 years and six months in prison for the June 2021 murder of Manuel Pereira, 48.

According to the judgment handed down cm had access, the aggressor, originally sentenced to 15 years in prison for simple murder and a payment of 140,000 euros to the victim’s three children and wife, was at odds with Manuel over the house he occupied when visiting Portugal (he was an expat). On the day of the crime “which made him foresee nothing”, he armed himself with a 4.5 kg sledgehammer (90 cm wooden handle and 22 cm metal bar) and went to the bed where Manuel was lying and hit him twice on the head” .

The victim died in bed, and the assailant was arrested the same day by the judicial chamber. The Supreme now understood that this was a qualified aggravated murder.
