South African police arrest woman and seize cocaine and heroin from Mozambique

A Tanzanian woman has been arrested in the southeastern South African port city of Durban for trafficking about R289,000 (€14,500) worth of cocaine and heroin from Mozambique, South African police have said.

The drugs were found in the apartment of a 44-year-old woman in Berea who was resisting a raid by law enforcement officials, Durban police spokeswoman Tenjiswa Ngkobo said.

“The entry was forced and the police seized 14 transparent plastic bags of heroin powder weighing 1.3 kg and six transparent bags of cocaine powder weighing 379 grams,” a South African police spokeswoman told the press.

Ngcobo indicated that the arrest took place on Monday, adding that the drugs were sent by courier from Mozambique for distribution in the municipality of Etekwini.

Last week, South African police arrested a 37-year-old man in Umlazi, also in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, for trafficking R$120,000 (€6,200) worth of heroin, according to a spokesman for the Hawks Criminal Investigation Unit.

The suspect was transporting the drug from Chatsworth, Durban, to Port Shepstone on the South Coast, a tourist region on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
