The 13 soldiers, four sergeants and nine enlisted men who refused to carry out the mission to escort a Russian Navy ship last Saturday issued a communiqué justifying the failure to do so. We are talking about “serious technical limitations” on the Mondego ship, which will make it impossible for the naval forces to carry out the operation safely.
Among the technical limitations, the statement mentions abnormal operation of the engine with oil leaks of various levels, as well as problems in three generators on the ship. “We also found a frank ingress of water through the engine compartment cooling pump,” it says.
The soldiers stressed their dedication and commitment to the profession, emphasizing that they should not be called into question by a decision that could pose a possible danger.
“From what has been described above, and since we understand that the safety of personnel and materials is seriously and seriously compromised, we have decided, of our own free will and in our conscience, not to comply with the starting order and uniform on the pier,” they concluded.
It should be noted that four sergeants and nine soldiers now face a five-year prison term for disobedience. The case generated controversy and exposed several issues related to the country’s lack of investment and maintenance in terms of national defense. Admiral Gouveia e Melo called the attitude of the military “lack of discipline”.
