Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha, who was removed from office in January on suspicion of conspiring to attack and invade Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace on January 8, resumed his office this Thursday. The permission was granted on Wednesday evening by Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moraes, the same one who ruled the removal in January.
In a decision that empowered Ibaneis to return to command of the government of the city-state of Brasilia, the federal capital of Brazil and where the seats of legislative, executive and judicial power are located, Alexandre de Moraes stated that nothing in fact had been established regarding the governor when, within During these two months, investigations were carried out, and, therefore, nothing prevented him from returning to the position to which he was elected in 2018 and re-elected in October last year. But the judge said that in the course of ongoing investigations, if anything is found that directly links Ibanez Rocha to the attacks on democracy in January, he could be suspended again and even arrested.
Ibaneis, an ally of Jair Bolsonaro, was suspected of conspiring with the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks that partially destroyed the headquarters of the three powers, committed by radical Bolsonarists, who demanded the resignation of the new president, Lula da Silva, and the return to power of the old ruler. But the investigation failed to prove the connection of the governor with the vandals, only that he was negligent, did not immediately realize the gravity of the situation and did not dare to introduce the necessary police forces to contain the radicals.
After being allowed to return to head the government of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, a millionaire who was surprised when he entered politics and was elected by a wide margin in the first elections in which he ran, declared that he had no regrets about Alexandre de Moraes and that he understood that at that time, who was removed from office, it was the best decision. With the return of Ibanez, Deputy Governor of Brasilia Selina Leão, who has served as interim governor for the past two months, is returning to her former position, to which she was also elected in 2022.
