The Portuguese examination of the National Examinations of World Languages (NEWL), which provides credits for access to higher education in North America, has recorded a record number of enrolled students and is already the leading language in this segment, according to official sources.
Joao Caisinha, coordinator of Portuguese education in the United States of America (USA), told Lusa that 577 students have already signed up for the exam, so the number should increase as registration continues until the end of the month.
“Registration opened on March 1st and within nine days we received great news from the American Councils for International Education, the organization that developed these exams in multiple languages (…) through the College Board’ program, which awards credits for access to higher education in the United States. Indeed, Portuguese is currently the leading language in these NEWL exams,” Caisinha explained.
