Elvas Chamber declares three days of municipal mourning

The Chamber of Elvas (Portalegre) this Sunday expressed condolences “in honor of the life and memory” of businessman Rui Nabeiro, founder of Grupo Nabeiro – Delta Cafés, and declared three days of municipal mourning.

A note sent to the Lusa agency and signed by the mayor of the municipality, José Rondao de Almeida, indicates that the three-day municipal mourning will last until Tuesday.

Businessman Rui Nabeiro, founder of Grupo Nabeiro – Delta Cafés, passed away this Sunday at the age of 91.

“It is with deep regret that the Nabeiro family announces that today, March 19, Commander Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro, President and Founder of the Nabeiro Group – Delta Cafés,” can be read in a statement sent by the group.

Commander Rui Nabeiro “has been admitted to the da Luz hospital due to breathing problems,” the same source added, citing “the date and program of the funeral will be communicated in due course.”

Camara de Elvas also emphasizes in a note that “work, resilience, love for his land and his work ethic” will be “forever remembered” by those who knew the businessman.

“We cannot forget the countless moments when he was a partner of the municipality of Elvas, as well as the investments he made in our municipality, and it is with deep sadness and anxiety that we receive the news of his death,” read the document.

Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro was born on March 28, 1931 in Campo Mayor, Portalegre district.

“The entrepreneurial spirit and his work ethic have always been present at the decisive moments of his life,” the statement said.

In 1961, he created Delta Cafés, “starting a business group that today leads the coffee market in Portugal” and is “expanding strongly in international markets,” the business group stressed.

“The entire Delta family is deeply saddened by this loss and extends its sincere condolences to all those who also lost a great friend today,” the statement said.

“We are all committed to continuing his legacy and honoring his vision by continuing to produce the best coffee in the world, supporting local communities and promoting sustainable development,” he adds.
