On Monday, the government signed a protocol providing for the application of a zero VAT rate to various food products, and made public the list of food products. The measure, announced by Prime Minister António Costa, is meant to help Portuguese families.
This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers meets to approve the bill, which will then enter the Assembly of the Republic (AR). Once approved by the AR, the measure must still be adopted by the President of the Republic. Companies have fifteen days to adjust prices after the publication of the law in Diário da República, which means the values will not be updated by Easter.
“The total cost of this program is about 600 million euros,” António Costa said. “It has a horizon of six months and we have to follow its development,” he added.
The zero VAT basket includes 44 items divided into seven categories.
