Study a group of scientists from the University of Hong Kong published Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in September, he concluded that if all the ants on planet Earth were put on a scale, they would weigh more than all the wild birds and mammals in the world combined.
In accordance with Washington Postthe study states that there are almost 20 billion ants (20,000,000,000,000,000) on Earth, equivalent to 2.5 million for every human.
This animal survives and inhabits all continents on planet Earth except Antarctica. “I would argue that most ecosystems would simply collapse without ants,” said Patrick Schultheis, an ecologist at the University of Hong Kong. Washington Post.
The study was designed based on the sum of all counts from more than 1,300 locations, but the researchers say the number could increase as more nests are studied. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it really is an order of magnitude higher,” said Sabine Nuten, an environmentalist at the University of Hong Kong and co-author of the study.
