In a spectacular and grueling operation that lasted more than seven hours, firefighters rescued a mare through a third-floor window of a residential building in the Brazilian city of Sao Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, which was hit by major flooding. in its history and which have already caused the death of at least 149 people. The animal was reportedly there for 10 days and entered the building to escape the flooding that was sweeping across the city.
The rescue operation, another of those that have already saved at least 10,000 animals in the state in two weeks, mobilized 15 firefighters who used boats and a technique known as dynamic ziplining to finally lift and rescue the mare, a feat that was only achieved after many hours of violent effort by everyone. Before being carried out of the apartment, the heavy animal was blindfolded and sedated to facilitate the rescue operation and avoid further nervousness.
A video showing a mare in a window on the third floor of the building alerted firefighters, who sent a team to the site on Tuesday to assess the situation and what measures could be taken. The veterinarian concluded that the mare’s health was critical because she had not been fed or watered for 10 days, and warned that unless rescue was carried out within a few hours, the animal would likely die.
Therefore, before starting rescue work, firefighters fed and watered the animal while still in the apartment from which the residents fled at the beginning of the flood, so that it would at least recover enough to be pulled out of the house. there. . After being picked up and removed from the house, the mare was taken to a shelter for animals rescued from the flood and received veterinary care.
Apparently, according to firefighters, the mare was on the street, fleeing the flood that swept the city and displaced 100 thousand people, almost its entire population, and, seeing the door of the building left open by the residents, fled. In desperation from the flood, he entered. Then, when the water flooded the building and went up floor after floor, the animal also climbed the steps until it stopped on the third floor, where it found an open door and took refuge in one of the apartments.
On the 9th, in another city, Canoas, also heavily damaged by flooding, firefighters with the help of army soldiers had already rescued a horse in an equally unusual situation. In this case, the huge animal was isolated and sitting despairingly on the roof of a building, with no idea how it got there.
