In 2022, Portugal paid more than 323,000 euros in compensation for European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) convictions, up from 140,097 euros the previous year, according to a report by the Court’s Committee of Ministers published this Thursday.
The 2022 annual report of the Committee of Ministers responsible for overseeing the execution of ECtHR judgments states that full payment of compensation awarded by the court has been recorded in nine cases, pending “confirmation of full payment and/or interest on arrears in six cases.” cases in which the period specified in the judgment of the Court has passed more than six months.
The ECtHR, established in 1959, is the international court of the Council of Europe that hears complaints about violations of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
