The Service for Foreigners and Border Guards (SEF) detained a 52-year-old foreigner at Lisbon airport on suspicion of aiding illegal immigration and forging documents.
Agents caught the man in the act of facilitating the entry into Portugal of four foreign nationals, two men and two women. The detainee used false documents and claimed that the group consisted of doctors from the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe who had come to attend the conference.
According to the statement, after investigating, the agents found that “the facilitator has been engaged in this type of offense for at least a year” and has already allowed more than 20 foreign nationals to enter Portugal.
The detainee already had at least five criminal cases related to thefts in Portugal.
“Four citizens who tried to deceive the border authorities were denied entry into the country on a fake document, and administrative procedural measures were taken to deport them to their countries of origin,” the SEF said in a statement.
The detainee was ordered to appear once every two weeks, hand over his passport and forbid leaving the country.
