Jack Douglas Teixeira, 21, the grandson of an Azorean, is accused of leaking confidential United States of America (US) government documents online. This Friday, the young man was formally charged in a Boston court with two crimes under the espionage law.
The Portuguese descendant was arrested on Thursday by a group of FBI agents at his mother and stepfather’s home in North Dayton, Massachusetts, USA. Jack served in the National Air Force, as did his stepfather Thomas Dufolt, who retired in 2019.
According to Francisco Viveiros, president of the House of the Azores in Fall River, New England, the suspect is a third-generation Portuguese, the grandson of immigrants from the Azores. But the roots of the family will be in Beira.

Jack Teixeira joined the Air Force in 2019. He worked Cyber transport systems specialist, Responsible for operating the military communications network at Otis Air Force Base in Rhode Island. The indictment alleges that Jack Teixeira began exposing classified U.S. government documents on the Discor app — a group chat app originally aimed at gamer communities — in December 2022.
The documents were published in a group allegedly created by a Portuguese descendant for gun lovers. The group was called Thug Shaker Central. According to an interview with an American newspaper Washington Post for the two members of the Discord group, shared content ranged from black humor, racial slurs, and videos of people using guns, including the youngest person shooting.
