Portuguese João Canijo won the Best Director award at the Uruguay International Film Festival this Saturday, said Cinemateca Uruguaia in Montevideo, which organized the event.
“The obsessive composition of frames and the development of an equally meticulous sound concept are the hallmarks of a director who has a cinematic idea and a way to implement it frame by frame,” the jury emphasized, evaluating the film “Mal Zhit”.
“Formal force serves the study of the female psyche in the conditions of a radical crisis affecting all its essential links. Dramatic mechanisms almost directly convey to the viewer the experiences of the characters – a tedious, but aesthetically delightful effect, ”he added.
The film “Mal Viver” has already received the Silver Bear at the end of February for the Jury Prize of the 73rd Berlin Film Festival.
The film, according to the synopsis, “is the story of a family of several women from different generations who lead a life torn apart by resentment and anger, which is shaken by the unexpected arrival of a granddaughter, at the time of the weekend.”
The cast included actresses Rita Blanco, Anabela Moreira, Madalena Almeida, Clea Almeida, Vera Barreto, Filip Areos, Leonor Silveira, Lia Carvalho, Beatriz Batarda, Leonor Vasconcelos and Carolina Amaral, joined by actors Nuno López and Rafael Morais.
The film will premiere in Portuguese cinemas on May 11.
With the feature film “Sangue do Meu Sangue” (2011), which also starred Rita Blanco and Anabela Moreira, Joao Canijo won several awards at European film festivals.
João Kanizhu currently chairs the jury of the Istanbul Film Festival, which also screens Mal Viver and Viver Mal, according to Midas Filmes.

The award was voted on by a jury of participants aged 12 to 15.
The animated film, nominated for a Goya Award in Spain, stars Rosa as she returns to her grandfather’s village in search of her roots and family background.
The Audience Award was awarded by another Portuguese entry for Best Short Film in the same competition, The Ice Traders by João González, which had already been nominated for an Oscar and won five awards at the 22nd Monstra – Lisbon Animation Festival, including Best Short Film movie. , SPA Award | Vasco Granja and the Audience Award.
Finally, “O Homem do Lixo” by the Portuguese Laura Gonçalves received special recognition at the International Short Film Competition.
