Workers marched through France outraged by the increase in the retirement age of President Emmanuel Macron this Monday, as police fired tear gas in Paris and the city of Nantes during Labor Day demonstrations across Europe, Reuters reported.
In Paris, Extinction Rebellion activists poured paint over the façade of the Louis Vuitton Foundation and threw stones at the façade of the Ritz Hotel. Police were hit by projectiles, bicycles were set on fire and bus stops destroyed as the union-led march moved away from the center of Republic Square.
This week marks another wave of protests against raising the retirement age, which rose from 62 to 64 in April.
The demonstration comes two days before the French Constitutional Council evaluates a second request for a referendum on a joint reform law initiative.
Macron’s popularity plummeted to historic lows during the yellow vest crisis after he raised the retirement age. The French President was greeted with whistles and thunder.
