The humanitarian situation in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine is deteriorating, with thousands of civilians unable to access basic services due to intensified clashes with Russian troops over the past two months, the UN warned this Wednesday.
According to an update from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), “a serious humanitarian crisis is rapidly developing in the area around Marinka in the Donetsk region, where about 5,000 civilians – according to aid workers on the ground – face intense ground fighting and fighting that increased sharply over the past two months.
This scenario, OCHA said, citing information from aid workers in the region, also had an impact on the humanitarian situation in the neighboring communities of Kurakhovo and Vugledar, home to about 24,000 civilians, “due to both the direct impact of hostilities and for pressure on the services. and resources”, which forced people to flee to other areas of Donetsk.
