This Friday, a Russian court temporarily placed award-winning filmmaker Yevgeniya Berkovich in temporary custody, accused of apologizing for terrorism in one of her plays in the midst of a crackdown on dissident voices in Russia following a military invasion of Ukraine.
The 38-year-old artist, who faces up to seven years in prison, has been placed under preventive measures until July 4, the Zamoskvoretsky Court of Moscow said, citing Russian news agencies.
The day before, she was detained in Moscow by investigators along with playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, 43, who is due to face the same court this Friday, according to images released by Russian opposition media.
