The municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto are considering issuing an unreliable license in the summer for a vessel to carry passengers on the river Douro, Gaia’s president announced on Monday.
“We had an unreliable license last year, I admit that I appreciated the unreliable license this year, in the summer, namely during San Pedro da Afurada. [festa popular] or Mares Vivas [festival] and Porto [câmara] I agree, we both agree on this,” Eduardo Vitor Rodriguez told reporters at the end of the meeting with the municipal executive.
The mayor said the list of requirements for the resumption of the inter-municipal river crossing between Afurada in Gaia and Cais do Ouro in Porto, which has been suspended since 2020, is “such that no one is willing to take over the service.” .
“We have to be very demanding, but adequate requirements. It is one thing to cross the Tagus River, another to cross the Douro River,” he said.
According to him, the level of requirements is so high that no one comes to the tender.
In his opinion, it is better to have a less demanding but workable service than one that is too demanding and never works.
In 2022, the river crossing between Gaia and Porto, which takes five minutes, was temporarily resumed until July 4 and from July 14 to 17 “by boat in exceptional conditions” when the San Pedro Celebrations and the Meo Mares Festival took place. .
