At least six people were killed and five others were injured in a shipwreck Sunday in the Angoche area of Nampula, northern Mozambique, an official said on Monday.
The incident came after the ship collided with a log in one of the region’s rivers after registering an engine failure, Alexandre Selemane, head of the Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration in Angosha, was quoted by Rádio Moçambique as saying.
The five injured are “out of danger,” the official said, noting the number of people on the ship is not yet known.
Authorities do not know the whereabouts of the crew that fled after the incident, Alexandru Selemane said.
According to the authorities, the ship is capable of carrying 44 passengers and about three tons of cargo.
