As a teenager, I turned to Jilly Cooper for sex education. At school we learned the basics of our body. But it was Cooper’s characters who showed me what sexual desire really was. Most importantly, in her explicit scenes, women are the center of attention. It’s all about what women want and how they feel. By the time they came to me twenty years later, they had already become classics – and still seemed exciting and interesting.
Cooper is an incredible storyteller, and she inspired me to write my own racy novels. insatiable AND Headlight. That’s why I was shocked to learn that Cooper, my sex scene queen, recently told an audience at the Cheltenham Literary Festival that she had “forgot” how to write the scenes that made her famous and that she feared she might be too old . . “I’m 86 now and I’ve forgotten how to do it,” she said recently. I love writing and reading about sex. There are many fantastic authors who write exciting stories. I love books by Melanie Blake, Abby Jimenez, and Akwaeke Emezi. But Cooper’s comments got me wondering what readers expect from the sex on this page—and whether it’s hard to write about sex at 86 because there aren’t enough sexy books with older characters.
Cooper’s classics are full of wonderful inventions. In one of my favorites Imogen, love interest – “older man”… 24 years old. I’m sure there is a market for erotic romance with older characters, and I’m sure there are brilliant authors writing these stories. I wonder if publishers care about making sure these stories reach the readers who need them most? I want these books, and I suspect Gilly wants them too.
The best thing about writing and reading about sex is that it is an act of creative desire. You can let your imagination guide you completely – it’s a form of escapism. The most popular stories don’t focus on the appearance of the characters’ bodies. It’s about what’s going on in their heads, which gives the reader the opportunity to participate. (I’m sorry.)
As a reader, I don’t care how old the character or the author is. If I can identify with the story, a compelling book is a compelling book.
Writing sex scenes is hard because you really have to write like no one is watching. I like to get completely lost on the page and pretend no one is reading what I write. It may seem counterintuitive, but I believe that sex should only be written to please one reader: yourself.
However, we fans have been waiting with bated breath for Cooper’s new novel. Interception! I’m sure she knows that generations of us have loved and learned from her books. I wonder if she’s become a victim of her own success – the ability to write a great sex scene has nothing to do with age, but it’s difficult when you set yourself a very high bar and know that millions of readers are getting it great. sex scenes.
