Desired review: Disney has lost its magic

Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the release of the studio’s latest animated film. Wish, this is his public celebration. It’s a self-conscious tribute to its predecessors and an honor to the guiding principle brought to life by “Wish on a Star.” Pinocchio in the 1940s and is supported by a music video featuring the fairytale castle logo that has preceded every Disney film since. Unfortunately, it is a forgotten hodgepodge of allusions that has no soul of its own.

A vain wizard king (Chris Pine) rules over the seemingly contented citizens of Rosas. On their 18th birthday, they willingly wish King Magnifico their deepest wish – to take him to safety. He grants a dozen of them each year in a highly publicized wishing ceremony, but when the charming and evil Asha (Ariana DeBose) applies to be his assistant, she discovers that he has no intention of granting most of his wishes. Wanderlust accidentally summons a magical star from the sky. The very first wish of a star, if you like.

Longtime Disney fans will love all the references to the old classics. Fragmentation sleeping Beauty Mirror; a deer named Bambi and several other talking animals; copying lines verbatim Mermaid (“This is true love!” mega-villain Ursula was conveyed much softer). Watching Disney classics from your childhood over and over again feels like time well spent.

But the story itself is an overly patchwork quilt, a strange mixture of quasi-philosophical questions typical of modern animated films (see this year’s release). Primary School: What if water and fire fell in love?) and these old, very traditional, simplified fairy tales. Magic Kingdom, talking animals, success is determined by defeating the villain. Wish advocates merger but leads to confusion.

This is also reflected in the animation style of Solyanka. The studio used digital watercolor to create Cinderella Aesthetically speaking, it is fused with computer characters and it all looks ridiculous, like a bad green screen.

DeBose (who won an Oscar in 2021 for her role as Anita). West Side Story) is an extraordinary singer, but formulaic songs and plot do not play a role here. Songwriter Julia Michaels has written songs for Britney Spears and Selena Gomez, and the soundtrack always feels more like a 1920s Spotify playlist of ballads than a children’s movie.

Those who foolishly try to capture the innovative vitality of the unexpected soundtrack to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit. Encanto (2021) feel especially awkward. “I can’t help it when mirrors look like my face […] I got these jeans from outer space,” Magnifico raps. No no no.

Co-author of a big hit Frozen Writer Jennifer Lee Wish Unfortunately, she lacks the momentum she so desperately craves. I wish that next time Disney would rely less on old magic and create new magic.
