As 2023 comes to a close, the once all-conquering Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) faces a potential ending. Flop has been tracking flop for the past twelve months. LokiThe second season is disappointing and extremely boring. Miracles. Now comes perhaps the MCU’s biggest problem. Marvel and parent company Disney have cut ties with Jonathan Majors after a judge found the actor guilty of assaulting and stalking his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. The star that Marvel had pinned so much hope on for the next five years will no longer be part of the MCU.
At the risk of mixing comic book metaphors, the departure of major companies is Marvel’s kryptonite. Following the departure of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, the studio searched in vain for talent big enough to fill the charisma void at the heart of the MCU. In Majors, he seemed to have his man and did his best to rebuild the MCU in the image of his mega-villain Kang the Conqueror.
Kang was truly all-conquering. It was first revealed in the finale of the first series. Loki is perhaps the last MCU moment truly worth watching. Then he played ANT-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania And in Loki Second season. There, for reasons too complex to explain without diagrams and an astrolabe, he became the bumbling Victorian inventor Victor Timely.
However, these were all glorified snacks. The intention was for Kahn – and the big players – to really shine in 2026 with the release Avengers: Kahn Dynasty. The MCU suffered from the Barbinheimer phenomenon last summer, and a Kang-led Avengers revival was the studio’s bet.
Firing Major was the right thing to do and a welcome acknowledgment that the MCU does not tolerate abuse. But there are no irreplaceable people in Hollywood – with the possible exception of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man – and Marvel would seriously consider recasting Major as Kang.
Within the Marvel saga, this is extremely plausible. Kang is a multiplanar being who has taken on different forms in different dimensions. All of these incarnations have played majors so far.
But it would only take a few lines of dialogue with hand gestures to explain the remake. That’s assuming Marvel even bothered to point out that it replaced the main lines. He might just act like nothing happened, like when Terrence Howard was traded for Don Cheadle. iron Man 2 after Howard asked for a raise. Howard played Tony Stark’s best friend James Rhodes, and Marvel could do with a lot of recasting. Instead, he simply shrugged and moved on, with the crowd following behind him.

However, Marvel will be aware that not all changes will go smoothly. Johnny Depp’s dismissal from Fantastic animals The franchise has been eclipsed by the last film in the series, 2022. Dumbledore’s Secrets. Mads Mikkelsen was excellent as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but controversy surrounding Depp’s departure from the role sabotaged the feature film, which ultimately failed at the box office. Fantastic animals was caught up in the circus of libel trials against Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and couldn’t get out.
This is another decision for Marvel. Even before Majors was arrested and disgraced, it was clear that Kang wasn’t working. Yes, there was excitement when he showed up at the end. Loki Episode one. However, since then the character has been a constant disappointment. There were a few things wrong Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – not least the creepy special effects. But the film also suffered from a lackluster Kang, a main villain who felt so small and struggled to hold his own against great actors Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas – and even a disinterested Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Even worse indoors Loki In Season 2, Major’s charisma was nowhere to be seen and he was overshadowed by the truly likable Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
It would be absurd to suggest that a history of abuse has an advantage. But for Marvel, the departure of the majors is not only a setback, but also an opportunity. Let’s face it: Kang from Majors was a real hottie. Instead of rewriting, it would certainly make more sense to tear up the script and give us a new “bad” Marvel movie.
But perhaps this is already the case. With rights to Fantastic Four As the saga returns to Marvel following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, a new F-4 film will be released in 2025. In other words: Fantastic FourThe famous masked villain from Doctor Doom is about to enter the chat and give us the creepy chills that Kang couldn’t provide. In the long run, Marvel will be fine managing a multiverse without Kang. The sooner he accepts this fact, the better for both fans and the studio.
