‘Incredible talent’ – tribute to Full Monty star Tom Wilkinson after his death aged 75

Tributes have been paid to Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson following his death at the age of 75.

The Yorkshire-born actor won a BAFTA for his role as former steelworks foreman Gerald Cooper in the hit 1997 comedy The Movie. Full Monty.

His death was confirmed in a statement issued by his agent on behalf of his family.

The statement said: “It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he passed away suddenly at home on December 30th. His wife and family were with him.

“The family requests privacy at this time.”

American film director Scott Derrickson called Wilkinson, who starred in his 2005 film The Exorcism of Emily Rose, “an amazing talent and a wonderful person.”

He also joked about how the actor unexpectedly kissed him on the lips at the end of filming.

On X, previously on Twitter, the director wrote: “When we finished The Exorcism of Emily Rose, I wanted to say goodbye.

“When I went to hug him, he turned to the side and put his hand on my shoulder.

“I said, ‘Well, that’s a British hug if I ever had one…’

“He frowned, then grabbed me by the face and kissed me on the lips for five seconds before loudly declaring: ‘Never insult British affection or the sense of romance!’ We invented this thing

Actor and singer Will Young called Wikinson “Britain’s acting king” and fondly recalled how he supported him at acting auditions.

Young, whose roles include the comedy “Mrs. Henderson Presents” wrote on Instagram in 2005: “Goodbye buddy. Funny, damn smart, helped me get an audition with Diana Hardcastle and what a great actor. British acting royal family. Greetings dear Tom xxx.”

Aneurin Barnard, who co-starred with Wilkinson in the 2018 comedy Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back), said she thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with him, adding: “One of our great legends we say goodbye to ” , Tom x.”

Wilkinson was nominated for an Oscar for Lead Actor. In the bedroom in 2001 and supporting actor in Michael Clayton in 2007.

He was recently reunited with his Full Monty Co-stars Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy in the Disney+ series of the same name.

The original 1997 comedy about an unlikely group of men who strip off won an Oscar for best original musical or comedy score and was nominated for three other categories, including best picture and best director.

Wilkinson also appeared in the 1998 romantic comedy. Shakespeare in loveChristopher Nolan’s 2005 hit Batman Begins AND Best exotic hotel Marigold.
