American Hunt: Explosion at the Boston Marathon is a new three-part Netflix documentary series about the devastating events of that day in 2013.
The film, which includes archival footage, reenactments and exclusive interviews, aims to “shine new light on the tragedy … that has caused panic in the city.”
What happened during the bombing at the Boston Marathon?
On April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker pipe bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
The bombs exploded at 2:49 pm, 14 seconds apart and 190 meters apart.
Three people died, hundreds were injured, including 17 lost limbs.
On April 18, the FBI released footage of two suspects who were later identified as brothers: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, then 19, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26. Both were Kyrgyz-American citizens of Chechen origin.
After their identification, the brothers rioted. At 10:48 p.m., they killed 27-year-old MIT police officer Sean Collier.
Then, at 23:00, they abducted the man in his car, but at 00:15 on April 19, the man fled.
At 00:45, the brothers exchanged fire with police in nearby Watertown, seriously injuring two officers (one of whom, Dennis Simmonds, died a year later).
Tamerlane, 26, was shot and hit several times by his brother Dzhokhar when he fled in a stolen car. Tamerlane soon died.
While Dzhokhar was at large, residents of Watertown and the surrounding area were asked to stay at home.
That night, around 6:00 pm, Dzhokhar was spotted by a Watertown resident who found him hiding in a boat in his backyard.
Dzhokhar was wounded by the police and taken into custody.
