Almost 1.7 million users were left without a family doctor

The retirement of doctors and the inability of the National Health Service (NHS) to attract specialists are the reasons why the number of users without a family doctor increased by 29% in a year to almost 1.7 million, according to the Social Media Transparency Portal.

According to the indicator, in April this year, 1,678,226 users did not have a doctor, which is comparable to 1,299,016 users in April last year. The same data means that the number of tracked users has dropped from 9.1 million to just over 8.8 million over the same period.

The Ministry of Health posted 978 vacancies in general and family medicine, with the aim of retaining recent graduates and attracting specialists who were trained in previous periods and did not have a contract with the SNA.

An ordered list of medical candidates admitted and excluded from the competition was published this week in Diário da República: 393 candidates were admitted and two were excluded.
