Luis Montenegro steps down as SIRP Secretary General and Joao Galamba

“The rules of democracy are clear under the current scenario: either the government resigns or the government resigns,” Luis Montenegro said this Friday in a statement at the PSD headquarters in Porto.

The PSD President also demanded the resignations of the General Secretary of the Information System of the Portuguese Republic (SIRP) Maria da Graça Mira Gomes and Minister of Infrastructure João Galamba. Montenegro believes that the situation around the Minister of Infrastructure is “very serious” and that “it cannot be ignored.”

According to Montenegro, António Costa refused to replace SIRP Secretary General, a position that, for PSD, isolates the Prime Minister, who bears “sole and exclusive responsibility for legal and reputational misrepresentations” of news services.

For the SDP leader, suspicions about the SIRP have “irreparably” undermined the credibility underlying the “secrecy that democracy allows in exceptional cases” in the activities of intelligence agencies.

“I follow with great bewilderment what the commissions of inquiry say,” he said, emphasizing the incorrectness of the versions presented by Joao Galamba.

“He constantly updates his version of the facts and confuses the country. Was it not only now, a month later, that he remembered to say that the first person he contacted after this episode was the Minister of the Interior? “, he emphasizes.

The Social Democrat also indicated that he considers it legitimate for the Commission of Inquiry to demand clarification from the Prime Minister, who, by alienating himself from the “degrading” situation in which the government finds itself, weakens and deprives “dignity” “to political power.”

Luis Montenegro ensured that Prime Minister António Costa “may be isolated and held accountable by all”. The SDP chairman criticized the government and stressed that “time has shown that the prime minister’s stubbornness arrogantly clung to his political majority.”

The PSD leader suggested that he would “continue to scrutinize the government” and ensure that the party has a “serious proposal and is capable of replacing” chief executive Costa.

“Portugal cannot be such a turmoil, only a new government can restore calm and order to the country,” he said. Montenegro criticized António Costa and assured that “the prime minister is whistling in the air. He amuses himself with his international agenda and doesn’t give the country the response it needs.”
