PSD President Luis Montenegro today appealed to Prime Minister António Costa to use his “political skills” to solve the country’s problems, noting that “skill does not mean skill.”
“My final appeal to the Prime Minister is to use the tools at your disposal. You are known for your political prowess, use it. to be skillful is to deceive. Resolve issues,” he said.
The leader of the SDP spoke at the opening of the 3rd National Assembly of Social Democrat Mayors (ASD) in Lisbon on the theme “Autarky, what is the future?”, in front of a full house and with several people standing, in which Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas was present.
The meeting will be closed by the former Prime Minister of the PSD and the former President of the Republic, Cavaco Silva.
Montenegro insisted that there was a “political swamp” in the country and argued that “if the government is not able to change, the country will have to change the government”.
The SDP, he repeated, is ready “to be the initiator of these changes.”
“And the country knows that we have thoughts, knows that we have a project, and the country knows that we have people and a team, and most of the team is here in this room in front of me. And in this room, as in many others in the country, we are motivated, energetic, full of courage, full of energy,” he said.
For Montenegro, “it is necessary that the country understand whether Dr. António Costa has abandoned Portugal, has already abandoned the government of Portugal and given dignity to the government of the Portuguese Republic.”
The leader of the Social Democrats believed that it was necessary to stop the “political and institutional confusion” of the current ruling context – this would be, in his opinion, “good for Portugal, for the institutions, for the dignity of politics in its most noble mission, which is to serve the people.”
He added that this responsibility “is in the hands of one person” and “that person’s name is António Costa.”
“If the prime minister understands that only by normalizing the anomalies and keeping everything the same, he will restore the authority, reliability and dignity of his government; if the prime minister understands that he must remain impassive and serene away from the arena, disappeared in battle – the house is on fire, and the owner of the house is not – if the prime minister thinks that this will make the country believe in its future, then it is better to change the prime minister, “shot He.
Montenegro needs courage to end the current “unfortunate, very unhappy moment of Portuguese democracy”.
Otherwise, the socialist executive takes responsibility for leading the country in a bad direction, in a context in which the SDP will not give up supervision and control over the actions of the government.
“Today more than ever, and perhaps earlier than expected, we are increasingly focused on creating a political alternative for Portugal,” he said.
Montenegro thought it was “very important” to know what happened at the Ministry of Infrastructure, citing a controversy involving Frederico Pinheiro, João Galamba’s former aide, but defended that there were “more important” things, such as a transfer of power. purchases from families, the appointment of a family doctor for all Portuguese or solving problems in the field of education.
The opposition recently demanded the resignation of Minister João Galamba and an explanation from the Prime Minister over the controversy over the Ministry of Infrastructure, which involves accusing the government of stealing Frederico Pinheiro’s state computer and interfering with the Security Information Service (SIS).
The leader of the Social Democrats also stressed that “the government has never had the tools” that the current executive has: a parliamentary majority, “absolutely exemplary institutional cooperation” with all sovereign bodies, or the fact that the majority of the chambers are controlled by the PS. .
Montenegro also spoke about European funds, saying PS has millions to “invest and transform” but sees the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) as “kind of an extra budget”.
“Dr António Costa has been bragging for years about not submitting a budget amendment. In fact, he stuffed under the carpet all those captivity that forced the country to suffer from the biggest reduction in investment in public services since April 25. And now what? PRR is used for? Not to create greater competitiveness and productivity in the economy, but for supply, to adjust the budget policy that it has been pursuing in recent years,” he accused.
