Parliament Honors Road Traffic Victims with Vote of Condolence on ‘Tragic Reality’

This Friday, Parliament honored the victims of the road accident with a unanimously approved condolence, expressing solidarity with families and friends and recognizing the contribution of all professionals who deal with this “tragic reality”.

The project of condolences “To the Victims of Road Traffic Accidents on the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Road Traffic Accidents” was presented by the President of the Assembly of the Republic and approved by all the deputies present at the plenary session on this Friday.

Thus, the Assembly of the Republic pays tribute to the victims of road traffic accidents, expresses deep regret and solidarity with their families and friends, and recognizes the contribution of security forces, ambulance crews and other medical workers who are called upon to solve problems every day. this tragic reality.

Parliament also stressed “the appropriate role of civil society in raising awareness about accident prevention and in supporting victims and their families.”

According to the approved text, World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed on 20 November this year, “was adopted by the United Nations on 26 October 2005 to commemorate those killed on the roads”. , but in Portugal it has been celebrated since 2001.

“In Portugal, the number of accidents continues to be of concern, despite a downward trend in almost all key indicators compared to 2019, the base year for monitoring the target set by the European Commission and Portugal to reduce the number of deaths by 2030.” , says the same text.

For the parliament, “this calamity is not fatal, and therefore it must mobilize the energy of all – the state authorities, but also each of us – in a decisive struggle against its causes.”

During the same voting period, the Assembly of the Republic also approved an expression of condolences on the death of former bullfighter Joao Trincheira, who died on 22 October at the age of 87.

The vote of regret presented by Chega had a vote against PAN, abstained by BE, Livre and socialist deputies Joana Lima, Paulo Pisco, Berta Nunez, Alexandra Leitao, Marta Temido, Porfirio Silva, Ana Isabel Santos, José Carlos Barbosa. , Miguel Rodriguez, Paulo Araujo Correia and Hugo Carvalho, as well as positive votes from all other parliamentary benches.

According to Chega’s vote of regret, João Trincheira, also known as “The Lion of Alentejo”, was born on 6 September 1935 and became “one of the most important and famous Portuguese matadors”.
