Twice a week, the Matosinhos prison yard receives dogs from the Gaia kennel and turns into a dog park, where prisoners must train abandoned animals and help them gain self-confidence in order to find a new home. The Pelos 2 project was born to support and comfort people and four-legged friends who need a second chance.
“They are in a situation similar to ours, perhaps even sadder. We, like them, are isolated from the world. Just as we deserve a second chance, so do they,” says Leticia Gonçalves, a 27-year-old prisoner. Newspaper.
In accordance with DN, Leticia was imprisoned for four years. She decided to take part in the project because she missed the pets she left behind in Fafa when she was arrested. She took the initiative cautiously, but moved quickly and gave her heart to the Princess, a dog who needed to become more outgoing.
After three months of work, the young woman had to say goodbye to the dog, as she was finally adopted. “I felt mission accomplished. I went home to get the love and affection I wanted.”
The Pelo 2 project was born a year ago and has already reached more than 150 prisoners from six prisons in the north of the country. However, 21 dogs have already been adopted. Prisoners have the opportunity to break the routine, improve social skills and increase their sense of empathy.
