The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Friday called on the entire population of Portugal to act so that all forms of aggression against women can be effectively and permanently eradicated, and not pander with “complicity in silence or convenient reticence.” The statement was made on the International Day for the elimination of violence against women.
According to Marcelo, women play an important role in Portuguese society, “defeated for our own merits, obliging each of us to act, condemn and prevent any and all forms of violence against women in our country”, as can be read in a note published on the website of the Presidium .
The President reports that the number of cases of violence is currently “egregious”, and gender inequality still prevails in society, and women continue to be considered as an object not only in a social but also in a professional context.
