The mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia confirmed this Monday the “complete absence” of personal involvement in the scale of Operation Babylon, which led to the arrest and detention of Vice President Patroquinio Azevedo.
“I think that I have the duty, but also the right, to confirm my complete absence of personal involvement in any illegal actions in city processes or others, always being guided in my actions by scrupulous observance of the norms of law and ethics,” said Eduardo. Vitor Rodriguez in a statement read at the beginning of the public meeting of the municipal executive.
The mayor emphasized that he manages the activities of all departments of the city with vigilance, involvement and trust in the work of all colleagues, which, in his opinion, is mutual.
Last Tuesday, the day the Judicial Police (JP) carried out several searches in this cell, as part of Operation Babylon, Eduardo Vitor Rodriguez explained that “actions were taken to obtain the necessary documentation” for process 399/23. regarding the hiring of CTT to distribute the municipal magazine, the proposed hiring of an employee who, after all, does not exist in the municipal universe, and the hiring of the director of municipal auditoriums and certain municipal events.
“These issues were fully clarified by the documents or the reasons for their absence, since there were none. This process [399/23] has nothing to do with urbanism, but is simply an extraordinary coincidence with communicative effects,” he stressed.
The day after the SP searches and after his name was implicated in Operation Babylon, the mayor clarified that he was presented as an argument in process 399/23, which investigates “public procurement and personnel matters.”
“It was a coincidence that allowed vultures to speculate and digital cretins to morbid creativity,” the mayor said on Monday.
In his statement, Eduardo Vitor Rodriguez lamented that it is no longer ideas and ideologies that are at war, but people.
He added: “And the result of this political climate is simple: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, one day no one will have eyes or teeth.”
The deputy mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Patrosinio Azevedo, has been taken into custody as part of the investigation into Operation Babylon, the Porto Criminal Investigation Court (TIC) said on Friday.
This core process of Operation Babylon focuses on “violating the rules and regulations of city licensing processes in favor of promoters associated with projects of high density and scale, involving real estate interests in the order of 300 million euros, by offering and accepting monetary rewards. compensation.”
Operation Babylon deals with crimes of obtaining or offering undue advantages, active and passive corruption, evasion and abuse of power committed by an official or person holding a political position.
