Camara de Gaia orders an audit of the processes “wrapped with suspicion” in Operation Babylon.

This Monday, the Mayor of Gaia announced that he had ordered an immediate review of all processes “surrounded by suspicions” under Operation Babylon, which led to the arrest and detention of the Vice President.

“In view of the seriousness of the issues raised during the investigation, I ordered an immediate review of all processes related to suspicion, municipal services and with the support of Professor Fernanda Paula Oliveira, deploying this review in a broader sense. way to other processes,” said Eduardo Vitor Rodriguez in a statement read at the beginning of the public meeting of the municipal executive.

In addition, the municipality in the Porto area has hired Professor Paulo Morais to conduct an audit of the city’s administrative procedures in cooperation with the internal technical area of city planning, he said.

“Let it be clear that if this turns out to be true, the situation is unacceptable and does not reflect the management model that the municipality has and that hundreds of entrepreneurs, businesses or individuals can confirm. It is important that justice does its job, without pressure and hasty public judgments. Only then will the truth be revealed and the legal presumption of innocence observed,” he said.

The PS-elected mayor ensured that the municipality would never fail to protect truth and transparency, whether in city planning or other areas of municipal government.

“And we will do everything to strengthen the mechanisms of control and transparency, avoiding any mechanisms that undermine the law and ethics,” he stressed.

Eduardo Vitor Rodríguez recalled that the municipality manages about 100,000 administrative processes a year, has more than 3,200 employees and manages an annual budget of more than 200 million euros, “always under conditions of transparent and carefully controlled management.”

“Can citizens and municipal services continue to believe in the justice and integrity of those who have run the municipality for 10 years, not accepting any behavior that is completely incompatible with good public administration. But let justice be the one who informs the people. not people who replace justice,” he stressed.

The deputy mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, the socialist Patrosinio Azevedo, has been taken into custody, a more serious coercive measure as part of the Operation Babylon investigation announced on Friday by the Criminal Court (TIC) from Porto.

This core process of Operation Babylon focuses on “violating the rules and regulations of city licensing processes in favor of promoters associated with projects of high density and scale, involving real estate interests in the order of 300 million euros, by offering and accepting monetary rewards. compensation.”

Operation Babylon deals with crimes of obtaining or offering undue advantages, active and passive corruption, evasion and abuse of power committed by an official or person holding a political position.
