The President of the Order of Physicians (OM) conveyed this Wednesday to the President of the Republic the difficulties faced by the National Health Service (SNS), highlighting Marcelo Rebelo de Souza’s “great knowledge” of the sector.
“It was a very interesting conversation, in which the President of the Republic also took an active part, and in which we comprehensively focused on health issues,” said Carlos Cortes Lusa after the head of state received him in Belém.
According to the chairman, the meeting, the first with Marcelo Rebelo de Souza since being elected to the post in February, also served to express its “full readiness for dialogue and presentation of solutions to help the development and construction of the country.”
“We are talking about the challenges that exist today and that are known in the SNS, how changes are implemented in the SNS, and what should be the role of the OM as an adviser and help in decisions,” said Carlos Cortes. .
However, the chairman deplored that “the political power often makes little use of this cooperation from the OM”, but assured that he intended to continue the dialogue and “demand better health for the Portuguese”.
“I wish that the political power would not waste this added value, that is, OM and the technical capabilities that it has, the knowledge of the terrain that it has, which can help us have a better social network, better healthcare, more access to SNS and even more human resources and better working conditions for the SNS and for the healthcare system as a whole,” he stressed.
“It is clear that the President of the Republic is always very attentive to all issues, has great sensitivity and great knowledge of these health issues,” the president added, stressing that the decree “will consider in its intervention” Marcelo’s proposals. Rebelo de Souza in today’s audience.
On February 16, the clinical pathologist was elected President of Physicians with 61.94% of the vote, for a total of 11,176 votes, contested in the second round of elections with physician Ruy Nunez, who received 6,867 votes.
At his inauguration on March 15, Carlos Cortés made a “disturbing assessment” of the state of health in Portugal, with an SNS response based on emergencies “with difficulties” and with “navigation in sight” management.
“SNS is drowning in a system that bases much of its response on emergency hospital care in difficult situations, underestimating the indispensable role of primary health care, disease prevention, advocacy and health literacy,” said Carlos Hite.
