The Association of Medical Workers of Mozambique (APSUSM) has scheduled a 25-day strike starting June 1 that could be canceled if the government talks about improving wages and working conditions in hospitals.
“If the government does not provide a place for dialogue, we will paralyze activities for 25 days, which can be extended,” APSUSM President Anselmo Muhava told Lusa.
Muhave added that members of the organization are demanding higher wages and working conditions in medical institutions, given the lack of equipment in hospitals and the risks to the health of professionals and patients caused by the current situation.
This organization is demanding that the guardianship address the shortage of work supplies, including gloves, serums and x-ray equipment.
The president of APSUSM emphasized that the lack of funds exposes healthcare workers to the risk of contracting infections responsible for “deaths that statistics do not show.”
“Patients are required to buy serum” at medical facilities, Muhav said.
Muhav noted that the organization sent letters to the Ministry of Health to discuss the list of industry experts’ claims, but the organization declined dialogue on the grounds that the association is not legally recognized because its charter has not yet been adopted. was published in the Bulletin of the Republic.
He added that the reason for non-recognition was also named at the meeting of the leadership of the UAPSUM with the leaders of the ministry.
On the other hand, he continued, professionals in this class disagree with salaries under the Uniform Salary Table (UTS), a new public administration pay system that several professional classes actively object to.
Muhaw said the organization is made up of more than 10,000 NHS nurses, lab technicians, medical workers, assistants and drivers.
Doctors are not part of the organization.
In a statement cited by Notícias, the state-owned daily with the largest circulation in Mozambique, the Ministry of Health questions the legality of APSUSM due to the fact that its statutes are not published in Boletim da República.
Late last year, another organization, the Medical Association of Mozambique (AMM), went on a 19-day strike to protest the Uniform Salary Table, reaching agreements with the government on some items on the list of demands.
