PCP wants to hear from Pizarro and SNS CEO about closing maternity wards

This Thursday, the PCP requested an urgent hearing from the Minister of Health and the Executive Director of SNS regarding the closure of maternity hospitals in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley region during the summer.

In a request addressed to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, PSD MP António Malo de Abreu, the PCP stresses that, given the “difficulties faced by emergency services in obstetrics and gynecology and in maternity hospitals” in the Lisbon area and in the Tagus Valley, the government has decided “ announce the continuation of the rotating scheme of closing maternity wards in many hospitals during the summer period.”

In addition, the party continues, it was also announced “the closure of the maternity ward at the Santa Maria hospital from August 1 for a period of nine to 12 months and the temporary closure of the emergency gynecology and obstetrics department from June 1.” Centro Hospitalar do Oeste service.

PCP cites that as an alternative to these closures, the government’s solution is to “refer users to the San Francisco Xavier Hospital in Leiria with the option to refer women in labor over 36 weeks.” pregnancy, directly to private sector hospitals in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo area.”

“The decision to maintain the rolling closure of these emergencies and the ability to turn to private groups to meet needs highlights the possibility of continuing to transfer public resources to the private sector, rather than acting where necessary, namely in capturing and fixing medical workers on social networks,” – the message says.

In this context, the PCP is demanding an urgent hearing before the Parliamentary Health Committee of Health Minister Manuel Pizarro and SNS Executive Director Fernando Araujo.

In this request, signed by Communist MP João Dias, the PCP also mentions that “it drew attention to the difficult situation with adequate monitoring of pregnancy, access to obstetric services, especially emergency services, the quality and availability of contraceptives.” .

“Concern stemming from the evidence that maternal health today is facing serious challenges that are becoming more acute and require urgent action to address, as well as the adoption of structural measures that will put an end to the gradual decline in the level of care provided in the National Health Service (SNA),” the statement said.

For the PCP, “measures need to be taken to increase the salaries of healthcare professionals, promote them and improve their working conditions.”
