Suckling pig and cod tongues subject to zero VAT measure

Cod, whole or in parts, whether it be steaks, bellies or tongues, as well as fresh or frozen pig meat, are also products subject to zero VAT.

Clarification on the inclusion of these goods in the tax-free food basket this Thursday was made by the Tax and Customs Service on its website.

In the zero VAT basket, the tax authority continues to exclude watermelon, but includes melon, which it justifies by saying that it is “a type of melon characterized by a rounded shape, [pelo que] enjoy the benefit provided by Law no. 17/2023 of April 14, which is part of a measure created by the government to help combat rising food prices.

As for piglet meat, fresh or frozen, it is subject to a zero rate, since this is pork meat and the law does not make exceptions regarding the “degree of growth of the animal,” the tax authorities explain.

The same happens, moreover, with respect to the meat of veal, veal, veal, veal, steer or beef, since beef is exempt.

The tax clarification also includes lactose-free milk in the tax-free food basket. The same thing happens with sun-dried or dehydrated tomatoes, about which there were doubts.

Instant pasta also enjoys an exemption if it is not stuffed and accompanied by sauces or other products, namely aromatic packages, the tax authorities explain.

Zero VAT for a set of 46 food products will be valid until October 31 of this year.
