The SDP president considered on Monday that losing two or three percentage points to the Europeans would be a good result, and assured that a defeat does not necessarily lead to his resignation.
“It’s not just about winning or losing, it depends. The SDP lost the last European elections by 12 percentage points, if the SDP by two or three points, do you think this is a bad result? I don’t think so, but it’s not. I want to get results,” Luis Montenegro said in an interview with RTP.
The Social Democrat leader reiterated that he was working to win next year’s European Championship – just like he had previously won the regional championship in Madeira in the fall – but declined that a loss would automatically mean his resignation.
“I’m not going to tell you that failure in the European elections will necessarily lead to the termination of my functions, certainly not,” he said, believing that this would depend on the “political assessment” of two years in power.
“If I am convinced that I am on the right track, that we will achieve the goal of becoming a government, whatever the result, I will remain at the head of the SDP,” he added. in an interview marking his first year of election on May 28 last year.

Faced with the journalist’s insistence – “Enough, yes or no” – he replied: “I have already said what is important that people know today about my political position and the principles that guide my candidacy for the post of prime minister,” he said. , justifying his response “because there will be no elections tomorrow”.
