Costa highlights the government’s contribution to “a fairer and more decent housing market.”

Prime Minister António Costa said the government is contributing to a “more fair and decent housing market” with rent support, which begins to be paid on Tuesday.

“Provided by the Mais Habitação program, this is direct income support. In this way, we support families and help create a fairer and more decent housing market,” the chief executive said in a message on the social network Twitter.

António Costa’s message comes on the day when the first rent support payments begin to be made, which at this initial stage should cover almost 35,000 beneficiaries, who will receive an average of 86.72 euros per month.

The Prime Minister considers this “an important measure to protect the incomes of families most affected by the increase in income”, noting that “the support is automatically assigned, is retroactive to January and will be valid for five years.”

The measure, created to mitigate the impact of rising prices and housing on the income of the population, applies to lease agreements concluded before March 15, 2023 and registered on the portal of the Tax and Customs Authority (NAT).

Data regarding the processing of the support, which begins on Tuesday, was relayed in response to Lusa by the Department of Housing, which specified that these first payments are for households with exceptional welfare income.
