Pregnant women are forced to travel 50 kilometers due to work in a hospital in Caldas da Rainha.

The director of obstetrics at the Caldas da Rainha Unit of the Centro Hospitalar do Oeste (CHO) acknowledged on Monday that work is still underway that will require the hospital to provide hospitalization, a birth unit and emergency obstetric care. from Leiria, 50 kilometers away, he would be “worried” about the distance pregnant women would have to travel, but he guaranteed that everything would be done “to guide the women well and try to keep the restrictions to a minimum”.

Jorge Ribeiro admits that “due to the distance, one cannot be calm”, stressing that one of the risks is “fetal death due to delayed medical care.” “Adverse outcomes are expected to be zero.” From 1 June until the end of October, the service at the Caldas da Rainha Hospital will be closed for work deemed “essential”. The CHO encourages pregnant women to call Saúde 24 or 112 when they feel they need to be transferred for delivery. CHO doctors and nurses will strengthen existing facilities in Leiria on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and one or two days a month on weekends.
