Plastic bags used for products such as bread, fruits and vegetables will now be paid for by customers, according to Jornal de Notícias this Wednesday. The original plan was to ban these bags from tomorrow, but the government has backtracked on the decision and will continue to charge them. In 2015, the government raised over 2.1 million euros when it started charging for lightweight plastic bags, applying a cost of 8 cents plus VAT (10 cents) per item.
In an interview with Jornal de Notícias, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC) said it was finalizing a document to amend the law. The ministry also adds that the measure aims to encourage the public to “use reusable bags or reusable alternatives.”
MAAC has yet to announce when the law will go into effect or how much the bags will be charged.
