It was announced this Friday that the Portuguese Navy rescued 35 people in May after 35 search and rescue operations, most of them in the Azores.
The balance, released this Friday by the Navy in a statement, includes data from the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers (MRCC) in Lisbon, Ponta Delgada (Azores) and the Funchal Sub-Center (MRSC) in Madeira.
The largest number of rescue operations at sea passed through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Ponta Delgada, with 20 people rescued in 20 search and rescue operations.
In the MRCC area of Lisbon, 12 incidents were recorded in which 10 people were rescued, and three actions were coordinated in the Sub-Center for the Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue in Funchal, five people were rescued.
In the first five months of this year, the Navy coordinated 171 search and rescue operations, resulting in the rescue of 196 people.
The search and rescue operations involved various organizations and resources of the Navy, the National Maritime Authority, the Portuguese Air Force and other resources belonging to the Auxiliary Structure of the National Search and Rescue System, in particular, the National Institute of Emergency Medical Services – Center for Emergency Patients at Sea (INEM CODU -MAR), National and regional civil protection and fire protection services, maritime and port authorities and other authorities.
According to the Navy, the action also supported ships and vessels in search and rescue operations that deviate from their commercial routes to provide the necessary assistance, always coordinated by the National Centers – MRCC Lisboa and MRCC Delgada.
