Lisbon PSD Council Chairman Luis Newton asked this Sunday to be a defendant in the Tutti Frutti case, criticizing the Public Ministry (MP) for never hearing from or questioning him since the investigation began in 2016.
“If I am being investigated, I have the right to know why, I have the right to be heard and clarify any accusations, just as I have the right to defend myself if and when I see fit (…) today that he was presented as argument so that he can intervene in the process,” Luis Newton said in a statement sent to Luce in response to reports this week by TVI/CNN Portugal based on an investigation by the MP and the Judicial Police.
The investigation denounced the alleged exchange of favors between PS and PSD in preparing lists for the 2017 municipal elections to ensure the preservation of some of Lisbon’s parishes, citing wiretapping and emails that also involve the current finance and environment ministers. Fernando Medina and Duarte Cordeiro respectively. At stake are, among other things, alleged crimes of corruption, abuse of power and misuse of office.
